Ellie Joy Fortson
I've been singing for as long as I can remember—even as a baby, apparently! But my formal training began at six during the pandemic, when I started taking virtual voice lessons with an instructor in the Philippines. Two years later, at my grandparents' 50th anniversary celebration in the Philippines, I performed my first solo—a rendition of "The Lord's Prayer" in front of about 60 people. I had just turned eight, and I was hooked.
Around that same time, I started choreographing my own dances in our basement and putting on little shows for my family. Then I saw my first Broadway musical—Disney's Aladdin—and it opened up a whole new world (yes, I went there!). I knew this was what I wanted to do. Since then, I've been training almost every day in voice, acting, and multiple styles of dance.
What I love most about performing might surprise you—it's the bow at the end. There's something magical about giving your all on stage and then feeling the audience recognize what you've done. That connection is everything to me.
One of my favorite roles so far was Humpty Dumpty in Shrek the Musical. The costume was absurdly funny—a giant egg with a tiny hat—and I got to perform a solo in "Freak Flag" that was more soulful than anything I'd done before on stage. It was a chance to show a different side of my range.
When I'm in rehearsal or on stage, I'm focused but I love having fun and bonding with my castmates. When it's showtime, though, I lock in completely—I'm 100% about the performance. Off stage, I'm cheerful, outgoing, and pretty extroverted, though I do need my alone time to recharge (which surprises a lot of my theater friends!).
I'm a triple threat because I genuinely love all three disciplines. Singing is where I feel most at home. Dancing is a fun release. And acting has become this awesome adventure where I get to embody someone completely different. Together, they bring out different parts of me.
I'm currently an 11-year-old sixth grader based just a few miles from NYC, and my ultimate dream is to make it to Broadway. While musical theater has my heart, I'm I'm incredibly excited and eager for on-camera opportunities in film, TV, and commercials.
When I'm not performing, you might find me on the tennis court, traveling with my family, editing videos on CapCut, or reorganizing my room (it's fun!). I also love watching TV—I've seen every episode of KC Undercover at least four times (Zendaya is the best!). I recently started watching Stranger Things, which is cool because I used to be scared of shows like that, but I can't stop watching this one. Plus, it's inspiring to know that several cast members came from Broadway!
Oh, and I'm also a 1st Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo—so watch out! Want to see more of my adventures? Check out my Instagram!
